 Manual of Freediving
Umberto Pelizzari and Stefano Tovagliere

The second edition of The Manual of Freediving has been released in an English-language edition. This best-selling text is considered to be the definitive guide to the sport of breath-hold diving and apnea training, as it unites theory with the real-world experience of record-setting experts. In addition, it provides a valuable resource for any diver or swimmer who wishes to improve their breath control and water skills, or to broaden their understanding of human physiology and mind control.

The new edition, which was released in early 2016, contains more than 120 additional pages that reflect the latest research on mental and physical preparation, including new and advanced techniques for improving equalization, in-water performance and safety, relaxation and breath control. Throughout the text, specific practices and exercise sequences are presented in easily understood and well-illustrated formats that guide the reader through the learning process.

The text is authored by two of the most knowledgeable and respected free-diving practitioners and coaches in the world. Umberto Pelizzari is the holder of 16 world records, and the first human to perform a breath-hold swim a depth of 80 meters (263 feet) and reach a maximum depth of 150 meters (492 feet). Pelizzari and co-author Stefano Tovagliere are founders of the Apnea Academy, an international school based in Italy, devoted to research and the teaching of freediving to individuals and groups such as special forces divers.

Specific information presented in the manual is based on a combination of leading-edge research into human physiology and practical training techniques perfected at the academy. The authors' personal expertise and expansive knowledge of apnea performance is reflected in chapters that cover all aspects of the sport, from history and land preparation to in-water training techniques and advanced practices for aspiring competitors.
