Hans Hass dies

June 22, 2013 - 19:22

Austrian diving pioneer Hans Hans has died on Sunday 16. June, age 94

Prof. Hass in his Vienna home in 2008.

With the passing of Hans Hass the dive community has lost another of its great pioneers.

He authored over 25 books, produced about 70 films for television and four movies.

Hass completed his first underwater film called Pirsch unter Wasser (i.e. Stalking under Water) in 1940. In his early diving he used rebreathers which he had made for him by the German diving gear maker Dräger: he had these sets made with the breathing bag on his back, as he did not like the bag-on-chest "frogman look".

In 1942 Hass completed the filming of his second underwater movie called Menschen unter Haien (i.e. Men among Sharks) which lasted for 84 minutes and was produced during several months in the Aegean Sea and the Sea of Crete. Due to the war, it did not premier until 1947 in Zurich. A highlight is the interaction of the divers with sharks.

Hans Hass is survived by his second wife, Lotte Baierl, with whom he has been married since 1950.
