New UK study reveals majority of global WiFi hotspots insecure
According to a new UK study, an overwhelming 87% of global WiFi hotspots are not secure, with many travellers unaware of the risks. Research revealed that nine out of ten UK travellers expose personal information, although 77% of those queried were worried about the potential consequences of using WiFi abroad. With regards to public networks, the top three worries for travellers are: using banking, financial websites or apps; making online purchases with a credit or debit card; and using websites that require a password and log in. According to study results, only 17% were anxious about utilising social media networking sites or accessing emails, both of which can pose a significant risk to personal data. Nearly 2,000 UK residents took part in the study, which was conducted by AnchorFree.
