A new canister lighting system has been launched specifically for the underwater videography / photography market.

The OrcaTorch D600V light head has four USA CREE XM-L2(U3) neutral white LEDs. These produce a super wide 120° beam with natural colour rendition / 500K colour temperate and a maximum output of 2,700 Lumens for 70 minutes. (The low power burn-time is 11 hours).

Colour temperature is important because you want the illumination to be neutral and not add any tint to the image. Whilst you will perceive colours as largely neutral underwater - your eyes adapt to the ambient lighting – film and imaging sensors are not that clever. (Although it ought to be noted that some modern cameras do have some automatic ‘white balancing’ to get the overall hue right.) Therefore you want a light that is neither too reddish, blueish or greenish, but emitting light that corresponds to, in most instances, daylight, or around 5,500K on the colour temperature scale.

The aircraft-grade high strength aluminium battery canister comprises two 26650 Li-ion rechargeable batteries and reverse polarity protection that protects the system, should the batteries be incorrectly installed. OrcaTorch has designed this hard-anodized compact canister to be detachable from the light head to make it easier to travel with. Other features include a totally sealed magnetic switch and a 150 metre / 492 feet depth rating.
