Ron Akeson dies following accident

April 24, 2014 - 18:19

It is with great sadness we have received the news that Ron, one of our most knowledgable contributors and long-standing friend of the house, has passed away following an accident last Thursday.

Ron Akeson. May you rest in peace

X-Ray Mag has learned that on Thursday, April 17, Ron was pulled from the water near Lighthouse Park, Mukilteo, after experiencing some mishap during his dive.

CPR was administered as he was rushed to the Providence Hospital in Everett where he was looked after by the intensive care unit. Unfortunately, he ultimately passed away yesterday.

To many in the dive industry, Ron was known as one of the most accomplished and qualified technical dive instructors, having started his dive shop in Alaska in 1980 before moving it down to Bellingham in Washington State in 1991. But he was also a marine biologist, a skilled photographer and a jack-of-all-trades who served on many boards and committees in the dive industry.

He was not only a very skilled and experienced diver being a technical instructor trainer having run a dive store since 1980 but was also a sharp-witted, highly educated individual who enjoyed a bit of lighthearted humor.

X-Ray Mag was also so fortunate to draw on his expertise, and in close partnership with Barb Roy, one or our longest-standing editors, he penned down a series of articles on technical diving, which are still available on this website.

Our thoughts go out to Ron's family and close friends.

RIP
