Shark nets give beach-goers peace of mind

Despite a spate of shark sightings, the crowds are returning to Sorrento Beach in Perth, Australia - thanks to the 660m shark net that surrounds the beach.

White shark.

Called an Eco Shark Barrier, the $900,000 nylon net acts as a barrier that keeps sharks away from the beach, and beach-goers safe. Made from the same material as fishing line and cable ties, it is held in place by nearly 100 tonnes of weights and 60 anchors. It had taken three weeks to install it.

"We've had a lot of feedback from parents about peace of mind and a feeling of security," said Sorrento Surf Lifesaving Club president Rob Doherty. He also commented that there were more swimmers after the barrier was set up.

This is not the first time shark nets were used in Australia, and it won't be the last. There are plans to install another shark barrier at Quinns Rock in early 2017.

Premier Colin Barnett said that the "ability to swim and train within a protected area will make a significant different to people's peace of mind and enjoyment when undertaking ocean-based activities."
