was awarded the George Medal by fellow scuba diver, HRH Prince William, for his fundamental role during last year's Thai cave rescue where he "demonstrated exceptional bravery - putting [himself] in danger to protect others."

A deep honour and a happy day. Rick Stanton

Following the investiture ceremony at Buckingham Palace Rick Stanton told the mainstream press “as far as I’m concerned this medal is a reward from the nation for what we did but really this is a symbol of the fact that we successfully rescued all the 13 people – and that’s got to be the biggest reward.

When I spoke to Rick later he told me "it is a deep honour and a happy day. It was nice to be able to share this experience with close friends and family. Who knew that cave diving Wookey and Swildons would lead to this remarkable rescue and subsequent honour!"
